Itinerary

North Island: 9D / 8N (Auckland to Wellington)

Day 1: Arrive Auckland

Arrive in Auckland and be met by our local representative and transferred to the city for one night. In the evening you can experience the vibrant night life and great restaurants for which Auckland has to offer.

Day 2: Auckland – Wellington (Overlander Train*)

An early start today with a short walk to the train station to board the Overlander train. The Overlander is a journey through the centre of the North Island, travelling between Auckland to Wellington. Along the way you pass the Central North Island ski towns of National Park and Ohakune. You also see fantastic views of New Zealand farmland, the volcanic plateau, Mount Ruapehu, the world famous Raurimu Spiral, and stunning river gorges - all from our panoramic windows or open air viewing decks allowing you the best possible views. This train journey will take a total of 12 hours. *From May to November the train operates 3 times per week (Fri/Sat/Sun) and daily in peak season from December to April.

Day 3: Wellington

Wellington is New Zealand's arts and culture capital. Today you can explore the wonderful sights, shopping and cafes of Wellington. Visit Te Papa Museum, the most fantastic and interactive museum in New Zealand or take an optional Lord of the Rings set tour.

Day 4: Wellington - Napier

Your rental car will be dropped off in the morning and you can take a leisurely drive through to the Art Deco capital of the world, Napier on the East Coast. In the afternoon be sure to join an Art Deco walking tour, or stroll around the streets by yourself. There are also plenty of famous vineyards in this region to visit.

Day 5: Napier – Taupo - Rotorua

Head off to Lake Taupo this morning and have lunch on the lake side at one of the many cafés. It is then just a short 1 hour drive through to geothermal wonderland that is Rotorua.

Day 6: Rotorua

Included in your tour is entry to Te Puia cultural and geothermal area as well as the very pretty Rainbow Springs. There is some much more to do in Rotorua from indulging in an afternoon spa or mud baths, visiting the Buried Village or taking in a Maori cultural performance and traditional hangi meal.

Day 7: Rotorua – Tauranga - Auckland

Today you will make your way back to Auckland via an alternative route through the port city of Tauranga. Have lunch at the lovely beaches of Mt Maunganui before continuing onto Auckland for 2 nights.

Day 8: Auckland

Today you the day to explore the sights of New Zealand’s largest city. Take in the views from Mt Eden or One Tree Hill, visit the wild West Coast Beaches, or cruise on the wonderful Waitamata Harbour. There is also plenty of shopping and fine dining to be had Auckland’s Parnell and Ponsonby areas.

Day 9: Auckland

After checking out from the hotel, your tour arrangements conclude with the return of your rental car to the airport or depot.
